Tesla CEO Elon Musk did make a promise to donate medical ventilators to hospitals that are dealing with the outbreak of coronavirus infections and in fact, the eccentric industrialist already purchased more than a thousand ventilators from ResMed. After that, he had those gift boxes get labeled with Tesla logos before giving them away.
However, a problem was reported by the Financial Times. The thing is Musk had donated BPAP machines, which is used to treat sleep apnea, instead of delivering the ventilator used to save patients suffering from severe cases of COVID-19. When being asked to give an opinion about this mistake, Tesla refused to provide any further information.
Fairly to say, both BPAP and CPAP machines are non-invasive ventilators, but they are not used with the same purpose as the invasive ventilators that hospitals are running out of.
Talking about this unexpected mistake, some experts from the Coronavirus Today said that sleep apnea ventilators could be a great help for those with milder coronavirus cases to breathe easily.
In addition, ResMed CEO Mick Farrell told Financial Times that they highly appreciated Tesla’s purchase of their bilevel non-invasive ventilators used from their platform that had been developed five years ago in Asia, then sent to New York. They also treasured any company can buy and distribute their respiratory products to those in need.
However, doctors have warned against using those machines to treat coronavirus victims owing to the fact that they possibly transmit disease.
According to Dr. Comilla Sasson, who is an emergency medicine specialist from the University of Colorado School of Medicine, they were simply telling that those machines could not be utilized because community spread can occur and anyone with respiratory distress should be considered as a COVID patient.
Although Elon Musk did fulfill his promise of providing free medical devices, he ended up sending the ones that are not in actual need at the moment.
