Bloodhound – a land vehicle model manufactured by the British company Grafton – recently achieved a mind-blowing speed at 628mph in only 50 seconds. This means the supersonic car exceeded 1,000 km/h in less than a minute – marking it as the sixth-fastest car throughout history. In fact, there’s as few as seven vehicles have previously recorded with a speed beyond 600mp, and Bloodhound now joins an exclusive club of top supersonics land racers, which includes Thrust SSC, Aussie Invader III, Sonic Arrow, Budweiser Rocket, Thrust 2, Blue Flame, and Sonic 1. Two of which – Thrust SSC and Budweiser Rocket – even raced beyond 700mph (appx 1,126km/h).
A series of high-speed trials conducted by Bloodhound took place in a wide, extremely-flat desert area in South Africa called Hakskeen Pan. To talk about the speed of 628mph in some context for comparison, the Bloodhound was faster than an aircraft, considering that it had cruised at such a speed on the ground instead of being airborne. Strikingly, it approached this speed without the need for tearing down a runway in advance like what a fighter plane often does. What’s more, the supersonic car sported a Rolls-Royce Eurojet EJ200 under the hood and depended on this engine’s thrust to achieve the speed mentioned above.
In the meantime, the team doesn’t seem to satisfy totally with this remarkable milestone. The ambitious goal is to make Bloodhound reach 800mph and become the fastest supersonic land vehicle across the globe. This could be possible as Bloodhound is said to come with a rocket in the tunnel under the EJ200 engine, so the system could likely generate a lot more power for the car to beat the current world’s speed record.
