Online learning and online testing have been around for years, but the COVID-19 pandemic has made these activities more common than ever. Students have to attend online classes to continue their studies while schools are closed.

While online learning is a high-tech, convenient way to study with a lot of benefits, its downside comes out when students try to cheat on the system. We are talking about several students who tricked an AI grading system to change their grades from F to A+.

Student are learning online because schools are closed during the pandemic

Dana Simmons, a concerned parent, watcher her kid take on an online test. She realized that the test was graded by an AI algorithm and the result came out right after her kid submitted the test.

By looking at the correct answers, she figured out that the grading system scanned through the student’s answers, searching for keywords. If it didn’t find the keywords, the grade was low. But if it found the keywords, the grade would be high, whether or not they were written in a full sentence.

However, this can have an adverse effect when students trick systems

The mother and her kid found a way to trick this system. Now, the kid answers two sentences followed by a series of potentially relevant keywords. Particularly, he picks up words from the question or the question’s video.

This mother and the kid are not the only ones to figure out the trick. As there are a lot of online classes and online tests right now, such AI algorithms can cause troubles. If students find a way to trick the system, they will no longer study for tests.

However, if they are interested in computing systems and just want to understand them, this won’t be so bad.
