In the near future, the International Space Station won’t be used for only research purposes as NASA has prepared a slew of projects in order to commercialize it. The US space agency last week announced that the collaboration between it and a company called Axiom Space will soon serve a space hotel on the orbital station, marking a new era of space tourism.
Axiom Space has become a long-time partner of NASA for 20 years, especially in ISS missions. The company participated in not only the management of these programs but also other projects related to the ISS crew. To meet the need of both space agencies but also private companies and space enthusiasts, Axiom Space has played a vital role in creating the first commercial space station in the world, hoping to roll out an unprecedented-yet-flexible trip to the Earth’s orbit.
As reported, the aerospace company will send the first module as early as 2024. In addition to this module, there’ll be at least two others which will also be launched in the next year, including one for manufacturing and one for habitation. It’s claimed that once the ISS close its programs, the company’s own modules will break away but still be in operation from another space station.
Other private space companies like SpaceX and The Boeing Company are likely to fly the company’s crew team to the station, instead of NASA. Ahead of an official launch, Axiom co-founder Michael Suffredini reportedly said he has booked some early tickets to the station.
Once the company succeeds in overcoming technical obstacles as well as building and running such a space hotel, the future for commercial activities in the space will be much more open to everyone.
