When it comes to making decisions, regardless of small or big, we tend to make the best one. However, sometimes though the intention is good, we still make the wrong choices. If everything is normal like it should be, human decision-making will process like this: first, we determine the target that we wish to achieve, second, the value of such achievement. Then, based on our available options, we will choose the best one that suits us the most.
Decision making is actually stressful, and this could contribute to our failure. According to scientists, human beings are motivated by making the most rational choices as they can so that they can avoid regretting. Such perfection to make the right and best choice can lead to the fear of choosing the wrong things, thus, make people become stressful and can affect their decision-making process. In some cases, fear can lead to the decisions that one might regret that they should not have chosen.
In the cases of choosing the option that we regret, our brain activity will be intensely affected, especially the anterior cingulate cortex, the medial orbitofrontal region, and the hippocampus, which are the areas mainly known for emotions and memories of emotions in our brain.
Also, our brains do not forget the choice that we regretted in the past. They can base on the emotional memories originating from these experiences and suggest the backgrounds for similar future decisions. Severely, such experiences can result in incorrectness during the judgemental process. As an example, researches have shown that the outcome of the experiences affects us more considerably than the overall experiences.
Not to mention that, wrong information can also lead to wrong choices. So, before comparing any available options, you should ask yourself: what are the reliable sources you can find to get your desired information. Scientists claim that bad choices can result from wrong information. If you have so many options and choices to choose from, you will overheat your brain and lose the ability to calm and analyze things correctly.
You may ask if you can beat your worst instincts? The answer is yes when you can detect the flaws during the decision-making. But first, it is important that you need to make good decisions to address them.
