Scientists Create Mouse Chimeras With Cancer Resistance That Live 25 Percent Longer
Anita - Oct 24, 2019
A new study found that longer telomeres can extend human life instead of being misunderstood as being associated with certain kinds of cancer like before.

The Spanish National Cancer Research Centre’s researchers team has developed a way to create cancer-resistant mouse chimeras that have a 25 percent longer life expectancy than other regular mice.

And the team has incredibly succeeded with no gene therapy. The researchers did not cut & paste genes together in order to create a designer mouse chimera, instead, they combined 2 zygotes to create a mouse with hyper-long telomeres.
The researchers have studied the possibility that the protective layers ensuring the safety of the genetic data – telomeres were the main factor in aging. It is known that whenever human cells divide, the length of telomeres is shorter, and then humans lose small pieces of chromosomes. This is similar to making a copy of a copy, ultimately human cells lose a lot of info which is taken over by the aging process.
According to the research released before, in theory, longer telomeres could result in an increase in lifespan. However, previous researchers now have bred laboratory chimeras with several elongated telomeres only. A research paper of the Spanish team said:
The previous study results had made scientists believe longer telomeres are probably related to some specific kinds of cancer. However, the new findings of the researcher team precisely indicate the opposite. Accordingly, the mice in the study had lower risks of cancer and spontaneous tumors.
The experiments could result in increased human lifespan someday. Though we could wait for years, even decades to see robust human trials, we still can believe in the human evolution that will skyrocket towards a future in which there is no cancer and death will be substantially defeated thanks to the development of science.
