The explosion killed at least 135 people. But this figure is likely to increase as rescue teams are still sifting through the rubble. There are around 5,000 wounded people with dozens missing. Officials have called the capitol of Lebanon a “disaster city.”

The cost of the damage is estimated to be around $5 billion. The blow has affected half of the buildings in Beirut. But the human cost is even more horrifying: nearly 300,000 people became homeless and hospitals are struggling to deal with the casualties.

Hassan Diab, Lebanese Prime Minister, swore that the person/organization is accountable to the explosion will have to pay the price. Diab also asked “friends of Lebanon” and world leaders to donate.

The US, France, UK, Gulf states, and Israel have offered logistical and financial assistance.

After a cabinet vote, the Lebanese government has decided to arrest people responsible for port security for failing to act even though they had been warned of the danger.
