A welder is said to be the cause of the explosion. Fire from the welder spread to a close warehouse that stored about 2,750 tons of highly explosive ammonium nitrate.

The cost of the damage is estimated to be around $5 billion. The blow has affected half of the buildings in Beirut. But the human cost is even more horrifying: nearly 300,000 people became homeless and hospitals are struggling to deal with the casualties.

The US, France, UK, Gulf states, and Israel have offered logistical and financial assistance.
