Samsung will place a thin solar panel on top of the TV remote so that it can use not only sunlight but even artificial lights in the room to recharge.

While televisions today are getting more advanced with sleek bezel-less designs, and 8K, OLED displays with wide color contrasts, there is one thing that most TV manufacturers haven’t upgraded, the remote control.

Most TV remotes still use Triple-A batteries, causing them to go out of power sooner than expected. As a result, when it runs out of power, you will have to dump the old batteries and get a new pair.

However, this might end soon with Samsung’s TVs. The South Korean tech giant has just announced that it will soon equip its TVs with solar-powered remote controllers. Consumers will no longer have to replace the batteries of their remotes ever again.

The move is a part of Samsung’s Going Green scheme to reduce the impact of e-waste. Samsung adds that by doing this, it can prevent the waste of 99 million batteries dumped into the environment in seven years. The remotes will also be made of plastic taken from recycled bottles.

The eco-packaging scheme of Samsung will be expanded to more of the company’s TVs launched this year. There will be a reduction in images and text on the packaging as well as in the use of oil-based ink that is harmful to the environment.
