Russia Successfully Completes COVID-19 Vaccine Human Trials, Volunteer Discharged At The End Of July

It has been nearly seven months since the COVID-19 pandemic broke out and wreaked havoc. What started from a small wet market in Wuhan, China has completed turned our world upside down and took away the lives of millions of people.

Researchers have been racing to find a cure to tackle the contagious virus once and for all. And Russia might have found the solution. Russian news agency TASS reports that Russia has become the world’s first country to complete COVID-19 vaccine human trials.

Smolyarchuk, Head of Sechenov University’s Center for Clinical Research on Medications said that the research had finally completed, proving the safety of the vaccine. On July 15 and 20, all volunteers would be discharged.

Russia had granted permission for researchers at the Gamaleya National Research Center for Epidemiology and Microbiology to carry out clinical trials on two forms of a potential COVID-19 vaccine.

The first trial was conducted at the Burdenko Military Hospital while the second one was tested at Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University. About 20 participants volunteered to take the injection.

After being injected with the vaccine, the volunteers stayed for 28 days in the hospital. According to the Russian Defence Ministry, the results of the tests revealed how the immunity developed to counter COVID-19. However, as of now, there has been no information regarding the drug’s details.

In case you have been wondering if this is the vaccine that will save us all and we can go back to our normal lives before the pandemic, the answer is no. This was only Phase I of human trials. There are two more stages to go.

Even if these tests are successful, they are only be tested with a group of volunteers. For the vaccine to be rolled out, testing on a bigger group would be imperative.
