Over a year after India’s first humanoid Robocop was introduced into the Kerala Police’s fleet, the Chennai Police has decided to induct a multi-functional robot named Robot Cop LD v5.0 to monitor residents in COVID-19 hotspots in the city. But unlike the robot in Kerala, the one from Chennai Police isn’t humanoid. Rather, it looks more like an oversized box put on wheels.
The device is reportedly equipped with a two-way intercom. It can deliver direct public announcements as well as listening to the public. It is controlled via remote control. There is a camera mounted on the top of the device for surveillance. Its wireless connectivity range is about one kilometer. The robot also has a built-in LED screen for messages, warnings, and alerts display.
The robot has been on a mission to patrol around the Meenambal Puram Street, which is a COVID-19 hotspot with over 11 confirmed cases. The job of the robot is to monitor residents living in containment zones, according to the R. Sudhakar, Chennai Police’s Joint Commissioner. In containment zones, police personnel can’t enter the containment zones and have to stand outside the barricaded areas. To make announcements, drones are deployed.
The robot is built to be used for the lockdown in just four days. It is a joint product of the Chennai Police and a number of tech companies which include Robothoughts, Callidai Motorworks, and SCI Fi Innovation. The department is planning on deploying more such devices in the city’s other areas in the coming days.
