In a recent incident relating to the COVID-19 pandemic, several inmates tried to get the coronavirus so that they could be released. And this was a group plan.
In April, groups in inmates in the Los Angeles County jail drank from one bottle and sniffed out of the same face mask, according to surveillance footage released earlier this week. Previously, the county released some inmates with concerns around the pandemic. Then, since the end of April, the infection has increased by over 3 times and now has 357 positive cases among inmates.
Alex Villanueva, LA County Sheriff, didn’t immediately come up with an explanation for the sudden, rapid outbreak in the facility after recording no cases in the middle of April. However, the answer became clear then. Villanueva revealed on Monday how the 21 coronavirus-infected inmates within a week was a coordinated effort to get out of fail. He said:
“It’s sad to think that someone deliberately tried to expose themselves to COVID-19. Somehow there was some mistaken belief among the inmate population that if they tested positive that there was a way to force our hand and somehow release more inmates out of our jail environment — and that’s not going to happen.”
Currently, the pandemic is fiercely attacking prisons and jails in America. As of April, there were over 9,400 positive cases along with more 140 deaths among inmates in the US. At the end of last month, it was announced that 70% of the inmates tested for the virus were confirmed positive.
