Pornhub Just Removed 80% Of Its Videos In A Bid To Crack Down On Content Showing Underage People

Pornhub is eliminating millions of videos in a bid to remove all of the content uploaded by unverified users

Pornhub is eliminating millions of videos in a bid to remove all of the content uploaded by unverified users after two main payment processors suspended their service.

The decision is the answer to a New York Times article revealing that Pornhub hosts videos of underage people and those with assaulted children.

Last Tuesday, the site made public that upload was now limited to verified users only. This means only members of Pornhub’s “Model Program,” which needs an age verification, and content partners can upload content to the site.

Pornhub said in a blog post that from now on, every piece of content on the site would be from verified uploaders, a move Snapchat, Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram haven’t done yet.

According to a spokesperson, the process would apply to all platforms owned by MindGeek – the parent company of Pornhub.

The company has yet to answer an inquiry about whether Redtube and YouPorn have to go through the same process.

At the time of writing this article, Pornhub has removed over 10 million videos. According to Motherboard, the site had 13.5 million pieces of content last Sunday but now the number is only 2.9 million. While the platform does have professionally made videos, it also serves as a site for people to upload their own content and make money off showing ads, much like how YouTube works.

After the New York Times article was published, Mastercard and Visa said they would run an investigation to verify whether the site hosted illegal videos. After that, they suspended their service, rendering two of the most common payment methods unusable on Pornhub.

The suspension is a big hit for the site as it also sells videos, as well as sex workers who rely on the site for income.
