The 2019 General Election, also known as the Lok Sabha Elections, is set to take place next month, from April 11. Ahead of the country’s General Election, the Indian Election Commission has joined social platform Twitter as an attempt to educate voters about different facets of the coming elections as well as encourage them to vote.
To welcome the Commission, Twitter posted a warm message that reads:
It’s worth noting that since joining the social network, the Election Commission has been repeatedly encouraging Indian Twitter users to vote in the 2019 Lok Sabah Elections. It has made use of creative videos, GIFs, and even graphics including short films with the aim to inform viewers the importance of voting in the elections as well as the impact of voting on our lives.
Besides joining Twitter, the Commission has also rolled out SVEEP program, short for the Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation, on the micro-blogging platform in order that people get a better understanding of the election process. With the initiative, Twitter users are guided through the stages of this process and are more likely to show up during the voting days.
The news has been reported by IANS, according to which Twitter India Director of Public Policy and Government said that India is the largest democracy in the world and the coming election is Twitter's top priority. He added that for the last few months, the company has taken steps to protect conversation integrity as well as improve the health of the platform. The company also feels honored to join the Election Commission handle to promote education for voters.
At the same time, Twitter India is taking its own actions to educate people and encourage them to vote. In particular, there has been a special emoji that looks like the Parliament and hashtags like #IndiaElections2019, #IndiaDecides2019, and #LokSabhaElections2019 to mark the event. The social platform said that these hashtags will be available in 12 languages including Hindi, English, Tamil, Urdu, Punjabi, and Telugu.
