This is currently happening in Texas, America as companies are allowed to dump thousands of barrels of oil into the ground. The reason here is, last month, oil prices were noticed to have the most significant decline so far due to other sharp declines in demands and space to store oil of oil traders.

According to Texas Observer, gas and oil producers are standing at their verge and now having to face a situation that can only be called “desperate”. They’ve already started with reaching out for buyers and pay them just to get rid of as much oil as possible. Moreover, perhaps right now some even are working on pumping excessive oil into the ground.
However, that doesn’t mean they will put the oil back into the exact spot where they sucked it out. Instead, they choose underground geological formations as alternative containers and are discussing which will be the best way to store oil and liquefied gas in there.
Local media has reported that companies’ action of temporarily using unconventional underground formations as oil containers were allowed by a regional oil and gas regulator.

One thing that caused a wave of discontent among environmental groups across Texas was that they did not spare any space and time for a comment period or holding a speech in front of the public. Therefore, when realizing the situation has gone worse, the regulator eventually rushed back to state regulations to make sure the groundwater was not being affected by their solution.
Emma Pabst, from the think tank Environment Texas, answered and implied with the Observer that the idea of letting oil producers and companies store excessive oil in other formations would definitely cause negative effects not only on the environment but also on their aquifers’ health.
