New Porsche And BMW’s Charger Can Add 100 Km In 3 Minutes

BMW and Porsche have developed a new charging system, working at 450 kW and adds 100 km to an electric car.

Due to the boost of direct current (DC), fast charging for electric cars, this type of charging has become a feasible alternative to refill a car’s power, including those whose cars can’t always be charged at home. Tesla is currently the company to make the best fast charging system, the Supercharger, which can recharge up to 80 percent within 30 minutes. However, BMW and Porsche they can extend the limit.

On Thursday, the pair unveiled their new system with the ability to add 62 miles (almost 100 kilometers) to an EV battery’s power within 3 minutes. What to note is, this system works at 450 kW, but no currently on-road EVs can handle such a large current. For instance, the i3 by BMW can only charge at 50 kW max, or the Supercharger by Tesla can charge at 120 kW max.

Apparently, to have the capability to use a 450 kW charging system, not only does the car have to meet severe requirements but the charging hardware inside the car has to be adequate too.

Regarding the prototype of this system, Porsche design it with a charging cable cooled down by liquids, the car’s battery also had its battery cooling system changed so that it can handle the current better.

Porsche and BMW are working with Allego, Siemens, and Phoenix Contact E-Mobility on this new charging system. The model station is placed in Bavaria, and everyone can come now. Plus, BMW electric cars’ owners can take a free charge here.

Previously, Tesla introduced its Supercharger and fast charge stations. The Supercharger was developed to provide fast charging for Tesla’s electric cars, starting with the Model S, then the Model X and Model 3. At the charging station, each charger can connect to a 400-volt battery pack and charge at 120 kW. By December 2018, Tesla as successfully in setting up over 11,000 charging stalls at a total of 1,375 locations across the world.
