We often praise smartphones that can last to the second day and award them the long-lasting battery life title but what if we can have more than that, a power cell that can power your handset for centuries?
This future is closer than you think as a startup in California just claimed it had solved a significant obstacle in its way to manufacturing a battery that can last for 28,000 years with one single charge.
The company in question is called NDB, Inc and its nano-diamond battery is powered by something that has troubling lawmakers for years, nuclear waste. You may concern over the safety of this material but according to NDB, the core is wrapped by a layer of diamonds, one of the world’s hardest material.
Scientists said the new battery is safe for commercial use in cars, phones, and planes as its radioactive emission is even lower than that of the human body.
NDB’s two proof-of-concept tests were completed on August 25 at Cavendish Laboratory and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.
The battery achieved a 40% charge, a much higher rate over the maximum of 20% charge of solar power. NDB is confident that achieving a 90% charge is within reach.
The new battery contains carbon-14, generated by the graphite blocks used for reaction moderating in nuclear power plants.
NDB extracts carbon-14 and turns it into carbon-14 diamonds which collect and emit charges.
What comes next is to wrap them with synthetic diamonds. The energy from the core is absorbed through the protective layer through inelastic scattering to generate electricity.
There will be a secondary charge, like capacitors or supercapacitors to store any excess power.
According to NDB, their battery is able to self-charge for as long as 28,000 years. So a power cell made in 2016 will be able to work until the year 7746.
