Sensor Tower mobile analytics firm has released a report about the success of mobile battle royale games. Accordingly, top 5 battle royale games on mobile platform have earned a pre-tax total revenue of US$2 billion in nearly two years.
The firm states that these 5 games are Rules of Survival, Garena Free Fire, PUBG Mobile, Fortnite, and Knives Out. Of which, Knives Out tops the list with US$643 million, Fornite ranked the second with US$630 million, and third-ranked PUBG Mobile raked US$438 million.
Especially, the revenue of Fornite in the Sensor Tower’s report is only based on iOS alone, meanwhile that of Knives Out combines both Android and iOS.
In Q1 2019 alone, top five games took up for US$476 million, increasing by 63% from US$91 million in the fourth quarter of last year when PUBG Mobile took up around 19% share among five games. Now in Q1 2019, PUBG ranked no.1 spot with US$148 million (31% share), up 12% share quarter-over-quarter. Meanwhile, Fornite’s revenue share declined to 25% in Q1 2019 for iOS alone, down from 34% in Q4 2019 with spending decreasing by 26% quarter-over-quarter to roughly US$119.4 million, as per Sensor Power report.
Free battle royale games like PUBG and Fortnite have affirmed their leading positions on iOS. The segment is said to become more crowded by the end of this year with the launch of mobile Apex Legends from EA. Apex Legends is likely to to gain its position in the mobile game market on iOS due to the decline in the revenue of Fortnite.
Recently, PUPB Mobile has released a new update and feature. Accordingly, “GamePlay Management” system of PUBG Mobile asks players under 18 to declare their ages and acknowledge a gaming advisory. With this updated feature, PUBG Mobile will also warn players under 18 when they should take a rest and stop playing game. The feature is available in some North African and Asian countries including India.
