Mathematicians have stumbled upon a theory named “37% Rule” in search of figuring out when people should choose a long-term partner, according to The Independent. Tom Griffiths, a cognitive scientist along with journalist Brian Christian were the first pioneers who developed this theory.

The rule basically indicates that, once you’re 37% of the way when having to complete a mission within a set timeframe, then you’ve already met the perfect point to make the decision, depending on which you have gathered during that time period. As predicted by the math rule mentioned above, the ideal time for most of us to settle down is predicted to be around 26.

Some people might argue that your selection process is too short and you choose too early, leading to that you could miss out on a bunch of better options. However, this also comes at a cost: Good options become more limited over the years, and if you decide to wait too long, there’s no guarantee for you as the dating pool will be tightened anytime soon.

For instance, you’re in an interview with just three applicants, your best strategy is to decide right after reviewing the performance of the second candidate. If he’s better than the first one, you should hire him – if not, you can still wait. In case the number of applicants is five, you have to wait until the third candidate to begin judging. However, it’s hard to calculate how many people you will meet in your entire life, so it’s something like that you have to take the plunge.
