The Mars Society, a volunteer-driven, not for profit advocacy group for exploring and settling on the Red Planet is holding a worldwide competition for the best design of a Mars settlement that can accommodate one million inhabitants. The winner of this contest will receive a $10,000 award, around Rs. 7,13,200.
Mars Society set up a similar contest last year and the participants had to come up with a design for a settlement for just 1,000 inhabitants. Last year’s winner is a team from MIT with their Star City proposal. The colony consists of five villages, each represents a continent on Earth.
Earlier this year, Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX said on Twitter that 1,000 Starship rockets could bring around 100,000 people to the red planet. Which might result in the creation of a Martian city with one million inhabitants by 2050.
The Mars Society is interested in realistic design only, which can actually be used for a real colony, so it has made public some strict guidelines for contestants. First of all, the city must be self-sustainable, meaning it does not need much of imports from Earth to survive.
This brings us to the need that the colony must produce its own clothing, power, vehicles, and other consumer goods enough for the lives of one million people. In other words, it must be self-sufficient to a certain degree. Imports from Earth are still allowed but in limited amounts and for advanced electronics, which can hardly be produced in space only.
Mars Society advises the participating teams to take technologies like 3D printing, advanced robotics, and AI to best use what humans have already set up on the Red Planet.
Teams have until the 30th of June, 2020 to send their proposals.
