NASA recently launched a challenge called Lunar Loo for those who have ideas of toilet that works in both microgravity and lunar gravity.
The space agency plans to send humans to our planet’s only natural satellite in 2024 as part of the Artemis program.
This competition is a joint effort of NASA and HeroX, a challenge platform. So basically, the space agency is on the lookout for the best design on Moon thrones for astronauts.
The top three designs are in for a $35,000 prize (about Rs. 26,43,812). The winners will also have the chance to talk to NASA experts about their ideas.
The ultimate goal of this competition is to enhance space bathroom options available on the International Space Station with a designs that is more efficient and also compact. The winning idea will be materialized and used on lunar landers.
Participants need to do more than just making a Moon toilet though. They need to consider how and when it will be used. What NASA requires with this challenge is the weight, the size, how easy it is to clean, and the decibel limits.
The design must be suitable for both female and male astronauts. It also needs to be able to deal with diarrhea.
The lunar loo must be designed to protect astronauts from any waste or vacuum when there is a system failure.
Participants under 18 years old will be considered to receive Junior category award, along with recognition from the space agency.
