We have the term “prescription glasses” for glasses prescribed to people with eye conditions. However, they aren’t meant to cure the problem. The Kubota company names their new glasses as Kubota glasses. And according to the company, these smart glasses can cure myopia.
The device, still in its testing phase, will use the lens to project an image into the retina of the wearer’s eyes, correcting any aberrations in light reflection that cause nearsightedness. The company estimates that wearing the Kubota Glasses 60 to 90 minutes a day will cure this vision condition.
Kubota Pharmaceuticals does not say exactly how the smart glasses work. At the moment, they are trying to determine how long the treatment will last, how many days the wearer will need to wear the glasses or they have to wear them for the rest of their lives.
A survey suggests that many Asians have myopia. A survey from the Kubota company showed that by the age of 20, the rate of myopia reached 96% in Korea, 95% in Japan, 85% in Taiwan, and 82% in Singapore.
Ryo Kubota, the president of the company said that they planned to sell the product in Asia first where there were many people having eye condition. The Tokyo-based company will commercialize the prescription glasses in Taiwan, Singapore, Thailand, and Malaysia in the second half of 2021. Kubota is still considering whether to sell the glasses in-store or online.
After observing the effectiveness of the glasses using a computer simulation program, the Kubota company began human testing in July last year. They are also working on a type of contact lenses to treat myopia. If the product turns out to be successful, it will be the most effective non-invasive myopia treatment we have ever had.
