IIT Kharagpur Students Create AI App To Connect The Elderly And Caregivers

Aiming to connect caregivers and the elderly, IIT Kharagpur students have created two interconnected applications called CARE4U.

With an aim to connect caregivers and the elderly, providing geriatric care on time, IIT Kharagpur students have created two interconnected applications for android smartphones.

A team of the second year B.Tech students have worked on the pair of apps called “CARE4U.” One can be installed on the elderly’s phones, the other on those of the caregivers.

The app which is installed on the elderly’s phone consists of a fall detection algorithm which is based on a neural network. The app can detect if the elderly fell or not. If it detects that there’s a fall, it will automatically alert the caregiver and call the emergency services, providing the elderly person’s location.

The other features of the app include mood index calculation and emotion detecting via taking pictures. To boost the effectiveness of this feature, a cognitive intelligent chatbot has been developed to interact with the elderly.

According to team member Kanishka Halder, a student from the Department of Electronics and Electrical Communication Engineering, the app is customized so that it can recognize a person’s current mood. As a result, when that person feels sad, the chatbot can recommend them an old song or a motivational quote.

The app can also handle activities such as make calls, send text messages, and book a cab. It also keeps track of medical records, allergies account, an SOS button as well as real-time location tracking.

The “CARE4U” app has a feature called “Medicine Reminder” which reminds both the caregiver and the elderly person whenever it is time for the latter to take their medicine.
