Dr. Ryuji Hirayama and his team at the University of Sussex have developed a new technique that can make holograms touchable. This is a major stepping stone for us to reach a future when no bulky goggles are required and we can actually touch what we see.

The emitter will draw the holograms in the air. The team said that their inspiration was from old TVs with color beams scanning at a so fast pace that people think it is one single image.

Dr. Hirayama said that based on the same principle, the team used colored particles moving in 3D space, creating a volumetric image in the air.

However, that is just the first step. The particles are only responsible for the looking, the touching part is created by ultra-high-pitched sounds that humans cannot hear, making you feel like you are sensing the images.

According to Dr. Diego Martinez Placencia, while the sounds are inaudible to humans, they still carried energy. The team directs these sounds to create a feeling of touching for the audiences.

This creation will surely stir the entertainment field and what comes first to people’s minds is the adult entertainment industry.
