Ever since COVID-19 starts spreading, health officials have been repeatedly emphasized how important proper hygiene is in avoid contracting the deadly virus.
However, little did they tell the general public what will happen if they use too much hand sanitizers, which can cause a no less severe consequence for people’s health.
When people use too much antibiotics, hand sanitizers, and cleaning products, an inevitable outcome is that bacteria will develop antimicrobial resistance. And the concern of this undesirable effect are increasing fast in the last few months when the whole world considers hand regular hand washing the most effective preventative method against the Coronavirus.
When more bacteria resist current treatments, the already struggling healthcare system will face even more strain. That is not all, even when the COVID-19 pandemic has gone and people no longer overuse hand sanitizers, the side effect it brings may persist for a very long time.
Antimicrobials are vital in the medical field as they are the most effective treatment against infection when your own immune system cannot work properly due to its weakness or damage.
And when humans find new treatments against them, the bacteria mutate to survive the medicine we use to eliminate them.
The misuse of antimicrobials has been a concern of health officials for a long time. When people rely too much on them, the strains that can resist their effect increase in number. Some of the infections that used to be easy to fight now becomes fatal again as they have mutated.
Antimicrobial resistance is usually associated with misuse of antibiotics, which includes taking too much of daily doses or not completing the recommended course.
What is more relevant to our current situation with COVID-19 is that some chemicals commonly used in cleaning products can cause the same effect. Using hand sanitizers in the wrong way can let the most resistant strains survive, thus causing a mutation harder to kill.
To make matter worse, people who have no expertise in healthcare now go online instructing others on how to make DIY hand sanitizers, which have no evidence proving that they are effective.
