Earlier this week, a group of hackers compromised an Amazon Ring security camera which was installed in the bedroom of 8-year-old girl names Alyssa. It is reported that the girl’s parents just bought the security camera four days earlier. The incident happened in Desoto County in Mississippi.

The girl’s mother, Ashley LeMay, purchased the camera during a Black Friday sale. Ashley works in the hospital. She bought this camera, wanting to use it to keep an eye on her daughter whenever she has to works overnight.

The hacker, through the camera, told Alyssa that he was Santa Claus and asked if she wanted to be his best friend. After that, Alyssa screamed and told her mother about this.

Ashley then watched the video to figure out what had happened.

However, Ring denied that there was a security breach. The company indicates that the hackers could have accessed the Ring account as people normally use the same password for their various accounts.

In a statement, a Ring spokesperson said that the company valued customer trust and took their devices’ security seriously. An investigation is underway. The company has confirmed that there is no connection between this incident and a Ring’s security breach.

Coincidentally, recently, the FBI issued a warning in which it stated that people should be aware of smart gadgets’ security risks. For those who own smart home products which include security cameras, it is best that they turn two-factor authentication on to prevent such incidents from happening.
