Fast Company reported that in an effort to make emoji more inclusive, the giant tech firm Google is adding 53 gender fluid ones to its smartphones.
In an interview with Fast Company, Jennifer Daniel, Director of Android Emoji, said:
The designs that they are working on characters that are in between the existing female and male emoji.
For example, the merperson emoji has an orange tail, chin-length curls and arms crossed over its chest. Instead of wearing a bowtie and necklace usually used for male- and female-presenting vampires respectively, the new vampire has a chain.
Daniel said:
The launch of new gender-fluid emoji will be a part of the beta release of a Google’s Pixel smartphone and will come with all Android Q phones later in 2019. The new emoji will join the newly released emoji specifically designed to represent disabled people.
Fast Company also points out that when developing emojis, Google works with Apple as well as other tech companies, so it’s possible to see them launch their own gender fluid emoji sometime in the near future.
