First Battery-Free BlueTooth Chip In The World To Be Powered By Air

With an aspiration to realize the promise of a fully connected world, Israel-based semiconductor company Wiliot, developed the world's first battery-free BlueTooth chip.

Signs are suggesting that we will eventually be living in a world with everything is in “small” size. We will receive messages from our clothes telling us when we need to wash them. We won’t have to order our milk since it can be ordered on its own when its expiration date is close.

However, in preparation for the Internet of Things to take over, we need to find out a cost-effective but versatile way to provide these objects with communicating ability. And the first no-battery BlueTooth chip in the world might be the answer.

A first-ever BlueTooth chip was demonstrated during the happening of the NRF’s (National Retail Federation) once-a-year retail expo by a semiconductor company located in Israel called Wiliot.

The chip is as thin as a paper and as small as a postage stamp. It has weight and temperature sensors so that it can transmit encrypted information through BlueTooth within 3 meters.

Instead of being powered by some kind of battery, the chip can draw in energy from cellular, BlueTooth, and Wi-Fi signals.

After the demonstration at NRF, Wiliot made an announcement that additional funding of $30 million has been achieved, which includes investment from tech powerhouses Samsung and Amazon.

Wiliot expressed its confidence in no-battery BlueTooth chips. The company believes that the chips will assist us in realizing the dream of a perfectly connected world.
