Facebook, along with its unstoppable rise, has to witness another rise of misinformation, fake news, and many critical issues. However, FBI – the most well-known intelligence agency in the world – now uses Facebook as a tool to catch up potential spies, especially spies from the country’s archrival, Russia.
Starting September 2019, the FBI has started launching a massive set of ads that intentionally encourage people to get in its office in Washington, D.C. Those paid digital ads were spread out in not only English but also Russian, meaning that the FBI already began its counter-intelligence program to use popular digital tools to approach would-be spies.
One of those Russian-typed ads appeared to promote the FBI and call upon support from people if they have any useful information.
All ads in Russian text arrived with accompanying images in tow, of course. According to CNN, they signaled various ‘encouragement messages’ to make them get into a friendly chat with the FBI.
For instance, an ad stimulating its targets would be formed to call out readers to make their move - for the future of their family.
What’s more, once a person tapped on the “Learn More” button, the FBI asked him to consider a helping hand. As reported, those weird campaigns are still in action. Up to now, it remains unclear about how effectively they will work, as well as what the FBI's radical intentions through these campaigns really are. On the other hand, a conspirational theory that we could come up with is that all the quirky ads are just elaborate trolls that the FBI is aiming at Russian government officials.
