This is might be the weirdest study yet and it suggests sniffing your partner’s fart might help you live longer.
The research looked into the effect of hydrogen sulfide, the gas humans produce and release to the outside world.
While the gas is poisonous to humans in large amount, researchers found out that cellular exposure to a tiny dose of hydrogen sulfide can help use prevent mitochondrial damage.

According to Dr. Mark Wood, hydrogen sulfide has a foul smell reminding people of rotten eggs and fart, but our bodies produce it naturally and the gas can actually do us good.
As stated by the research, fart can reduce serious illness like stroke, heart attacks, and cancer.
Previous studies have also proven that hydrogen sulfide can help prevent dementia and arthritis.
In a study conducted in 2014 by experts from University of Texas and University of Exeter, it was proven that smelling hydrogen sulfide in fart could be beneficial for you.
The experts found out that when cells in veins or arteries get damaged because of some conditions, they utilize the body’s enzyme to synthesize hydrogen sulfide.

The oxidative stress cells suffer might lead to inflammation that will eventually kill them, and hydrogen sulfide can help cells regulate the stress better.
However, when the conditions gets worse, the amount of gas produced cannot keep up. This is why researchers decided to do a test.
They created a compound called AP39 that resembles hydrogen sulfide and then let blood vessel cells expose to it.
Here are the expected effect of this gas on humans:
- Reduce blood pressure: Blood vessel walls become less stiff when they are exposed to AP39.
- Ease stroke and heart attack: AP39 may help widen blood vessel, making blood flows through more efficiently, thus reducing the chance of stroke and heart attack.
- Enhance kidney wellbeing: Kidney damaged by inflammation can be treated with hydrogen sulfide.
- Protect the brain from damage: AP39 can protect human brains from damage after a heart attack.
- Ease aging: AP39 can actually help protecting cell structure from the effect of aging.
So with these studies in place, the next time people fart and you smell it, think about the wonderful effects of the gas for your health.
