Experts Have Found The Cause Of Male Infertility In India

The gene deletions responsible for infertility are found on certain Indian population groups

The male infertility rate in India is recording high as the result of low sperm production, the absence or the unusual shape of sperms. Recently a team of Indian experts has found the leading cause of this, which turns out to be related to genes. They think that this discovery can pave the way for the development of a reliable test in the future.

The Y chromosome contains many genes that play an essential role in sperm production. If any of these genes are deleted, the male body will not be able to produce sperm. In Europe, they have found out about where these deletions took place.

Y chromosome deletion is what causes the infertility

This new study has highlighted a similar achievement with what we know in Europe, which tells us where the genes are absent among certain Indian groups. The team revealed that the deletion in Indian men has little in common with what happened in other groups. To conclude this finding, scientists at the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology have been working for nearly 20 years.

According to Dr. Kumarasamy Thangaraj, Ph.D. (Madras), FNA, FNASc:

What the team focused on is AZoospermia Factor region, which houses three genetic domains, the AZFa, AZFb, and AZFc. These domains are where genes responsible for sperm production are. The study has the participation of 973 men who are unable to reproduce and 587 men with a deletion in AZF regions but still can produce offspring.

The research did not specify any link correlation between male infertility and endogamy, but they said that theory could turn out to be true. They have reasons to believe so as many gene’s mutations have been proven to be caused by genetic isolation and endogamy in many other studies.

He also highlighted the role of this finding in treating infertility:

The team is currently developing an efficient appliance for the finding in the form of a test for infertility, which can also be effective for the genes causing the condition.
