A Huge, Apocaplyptic Dust Storm Just Happened, Gone Viral On Social Media

Almost half of 2020 has passed and it seems that we always have a new answer to the question “Could this year get any worse?” While the COVID-19 pandemic is attacking every part of the world, including Africa, a country in this continent has received another disaster: dust storm. A few days ago, Niamey, the capital of Niger experienced an event that was described as 'apocalyptic.'

Social media has been flooded with videos and photos of this dust storm that took place in the capital of Niger. In a video, you can see a still wall that engulfs buildings in Niamey while in other posts, the sky is painted in bloody red with many netizens describing it as apocalyptic.

However, this dust storm is not necessarily unusual. Sandstorms and dust-laden winds are common in West Africa during the dry season that lasts from January to April. The dry season here is also called ‘Harmattan.’ There is often a sandstorm if a thunderstorm lifts a lot of dust in the air and can go for hundreds of kilometers.

There’s another video viral on Twitter showing a gigantic wall of sand that was invading the city.

Many users on Twitter described this event as terrifying and apocalyptic. One user even called the sandstorm the ‘wrath of God.’
