The Delhi Hotel and Restaurant Owners’ Association has vowed to also ban Chinese nationals from entering their hotels and restaurants.
To support the country’s nationwide boycott of Chinese products, the Delhi Hotel and Restaurant Owners’ Association has vowed to also ban Chinese nationals from entering their hotels and restaurants.
The DHROA states that it represents 3,000 guest houses and budget hotels in the capital.
The organization announced its decision on June 25, after holding a meeting with the Confederation of All India Traders. The CAIT represents about 40,000 trade associations and 70 million traders in the country.
The president of CAIT, Sandeep Khandelwal said that CAIT has requested hotel associations in the country to boycott Chinese products like electronics, furniture, and cutlery. But the DHROA took it one step further by pledging to ban all Chinese residents from booking tables or rooms at their restaurants and hotels. Khandelwal also said that each year, Delhi welcomed around 800,000 Chinese tourists.
After the border clash between India and China happening on June 15, some Indians have demanded a boycott of Chinese products. The clash caused casualties on both sides. 20 Indian soldiers were killed while China hasn’t revealed its losses.
Regarding the boycott, experts say that it is something easier said than done. This is because India relies on China to import raw materials.
The government of India has been taking measures to be less dependent on its neighboring country. Recently, the country’s Ministry of Commerce and Industry directed that sellers would be required to reveal their country of origin when registering for any new product on the Government e-Marketplace portal. This is to discourage Indian consumers from purchasing Chinese products.
Chinese mobile companies dominating the Indian market are trying to deal with the situation. Xiaomi used banner saying “Made in India” to cover their stores while Oppo canceled its flagship 5G device’s live online launch in India.
