Because of the steady increase in the number of infections and deaths caused by the COVID-19 virus, hospitals are observing an inevitable lack of ventilators - the crucial machines that needed to treat patients who suffer from severe pneumonia or acute respiratory distress syndrome. However, a new study indicates that nearly 88% of those hooked up to ventilators died, according to data from Northwell Health, New York’s largest health system.
In total, the study was taken on 5700 patients. Among 2634 hospitalized patients whose outcomes were recorded, only 12 percent was treated by ventilators, and 21 percent of the patients relinquished life overall.
According to Prof. Karina Davidson, who has also taken part in the study, New York has become the epicenter of this pandemic. Every health officials in Northwell hospitals, from clinicians to laboratory professionals, are working nine to five to save thousands of COVID-19 victims from being knocked down by this fatal virus.
Approximately a third of all patients, including those who did not have any symptoms, had a fever. 1584 of them received supplemental oxygen. A patient’s treatment regimen lasts for four days on average. 57% of those victims had high blood pressure, 41% suffered from obesity, and 34% are diabetics. In addition, the study also pointed out that men were at higher risk of dying compared to women. Researching the total population, no patient under 18 died.
