Recently, Chinese authorities have discovered the SARS-CoV-2 virus causing COVID-19 on imported frozen seafood packaging. The seafood came from Dalian which recently experienced a surge of COVID-19 cases.
This happened in Yantai, an eastern Shandong’s port city. In a statement, the government of the city said that the seafood belonged to an imported shipment landing at Dalian. However, they didn’t mention where it originated from.
Dalian is a major port in Liaoning, China. Back in July, Dalian’s customs officers found the virus in frozen shrimp packaging imported from Ecuador. After that, three Ecuadorean shrimp manufactured were suspended by China.
It is believed that the novel coronavirus originated from a wet market selling wildlife and seafood in Wuhan, China late last year.
Since then, it has spread wildly around the world. Some new cases were brought back to China from returning citizens.
According to the Yantai government, some of the seafood had been processed to be exported. The rest of the seafood was put in cold storage and hasn’t entered the market.
The goods had been sealed off by the authorities. Everyone handling the goods was put under quarantine and tested for the virus. The results came out to be negative.
The latest outbreak of COVID-19 in Dalian started in late July. The first case was a staff of a seafood processing company. Dalian has had 92 cases in total by August 9.
