With the digital age, the world has become a place where CCTV surveillance has become something quintessential. CCTV cameras are everywhere, in the stores, offices, on the streets, and even inside our houses.
A SurfShark report has revealed how our world has been filled with CCTV cameras. The company looked into the most 130 populated cities in the world to find which one has the densest CCTV networks. The density was also co-related to that specific city’s crime index.
The report points as the city that has the most CCTV cameras per square kilometers is Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The network of the city consists of 657 CCTVs per square kilometer. Interestingly, the city that is in the 2nd spot is another Indian city with 480 CCTV cameras per square kilometer, Hyderabad.
The third place belongs to Harbin, a city in China, with 411 CCTV cameras per square kilometer. The next place is taken by London, the capital and the largest city in England and the UK with 399 cameras.
Fifth on the list is Xiamen, another Chinese city with 385 cameras per square kilometer. The sixth and seventh places are occupied by two Chinese cities, Chengdu and Taiyuan with 350 CCTVs and 319 CCTVs respectively.
The eighth spot is New Delhi with 289 CCTVs. And the last two places on the top ten list are Kunming with 281 cameras and Beijing with 278 CCTV cameras.
Out of the top 10 cities, six are from China, which doesn’t come as a surprise. Remarkably, while Beijing is ranked 10th on the list, compared to other cities, the capital of China has the highest number of CCTV cameras installed with more than 1.1 million cameras.
The report also emphasizes that a city with the densest CCTV network does not necessarily mean it has the lowest crime index, and vice versa. It compared Xiamen, a Chinese city, to London of the UK. Both cities has about 400 CCTVs installed. However, in terms of the crime index, the capital of England is at a higher scale.
The report points out that while people feel safer with CCTVs, they are actually used more in solving crimes rather than preventing them from happening.
