Elon Musk May Build A 100Km Tunnel That Holds Earth's Secret

Elon Musk said he can build the world’s longest particle collider at a much lower cost than CERN’s plan.

On Monday, officials at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) announced their plans to build a “Future Circular Collider” (FCC), which is expected to start its operation in 2040. CERN already has the world largest collider, 27-kilometer Large Hadron Collider (LHC) but FCC is likely to be 4 times larger with a 100-kilometer tunnel.

When going into operation, FCC will allow researchers to smash atomic particles together at higher speeds so that they can analyze their fallout hitting the power 10 times of what we’ve seen before.

Future Circular Collider has seen the gathering of over 1,300 researchers from 150 universities for its design. If the plan is approved, it may take 20 years to build the collider and about $5.7 billion to build the tunnel to house it. With another $4.6 billion to net the first collider and another $17 billion for a second running, FCC will cost about Rs 1.9 lakh crore in total ($27.6 billion).

After MIT Technology Review shared the plan the plan on Twitter the same day, Musk retweeted, saying that General Fabiola Gianotti – CERN’s director, had already talked to him.

According to CERN’s media relations head Arnaud Marsollier, the pair met at the Royal Society, briefly discussing upcoming projects and that Musk introduced his Boring Company. Since CERN publicly said it welcomes new, cost-effective technologies for this project, the idea of letting Musk and his company build the tunnel can be considered.

Back in December 2018, Musk revealed the first test tunnel of Boring Company, which was built underground at SpaceX’s California-based headquarters. Although that is just a proof for his concept, a finished tunnel could likely allow cars to “skate” on its track at about 240 kilometers per hour. Musk’s first success with his futuristic concept makes us consider he may actually help.

However, while Musk quickly made the suggestion about cheap tunnels, it’s worth noting that his three firms have seen a lot of employees lay off. As reported by Recode, SpaceX, Tesla will lay off 10 percent, 7 percent respectively and Boring Company sacked five members of its staff.
