The Globe and Mail reported Huawei’s chief financial officer, Meng Wanzhou was suspected of the violation of US sanctions against Iran. The incident took place in Vancouver, Canada a few days ago (on December 01). The US is now looking for a way to extradite the CFO.
Huawei's CFO Meng Wanzhou, the daughter of Huawei's founder & CEO Ren Zhengfei
For those unknown, Meng is the daughter of Ren Zhengfei who is the founder & CEO of Huawei, the Chinese telecom giant. Ren used to work as an engineer in the People’s Liberation Army and might be in relation with the Chinese Communist Party. That has made the US intelligence agencies concerned about the development of Huawei in their country.
Coming back to Meng Wanzhou, she is now holding a deputy chair on the board of this Chinese smartphone company. Her arrest still kept a secret until more and more civilians in the world have heard about the suspicions regarding Huawei.
In a statement to Engadget, Huawei said that it hadn’t almost known about the arrest of its CFO as well as Ms. Meng hadn’t violated any wrongdoing until that time. The company also expressed its belief towards the fairness in the legal systems of the US and Canada.
After nearly one week, the arrest has first come to the public when the US Justice Department stated on The Globe and Mail that Meng would face a bail hearing on December 07. Due to Meng’s request on a publication ban, the spokesman of the US Justice Department was not allowed to reveal any detail relating to her arrest.
In fact, the US has been suspecting the company since years ago. As a result, a probe was conducted by the Justice Department in April to confirm Huawei’s alleged violation of US sanctions on Iran.
