Warning! Asteroid Approaching Earth, Might Cause Global Disasters If Colliding

According to experts’ calculation, the asteroid will approach our planet on the 21st of May, at 9.45PM Eastern Time, or 7:15 A.M Wednesday India time

The Center of Near-Earth Object Studies is following a huge asteroid which is projected to cross path with Earth on the 21st of May.

This asteroid is especially large as it is between 670 meters and 1.5 kilometres in diameter. NASA calls the piece of space rock 136796 (1997 BQ). It was first spotted by astrologists on the 16th of January 1997.

136796 (1997 BQ) is classified as an Apollo asteroid, which will intersect with our planet’s orbit during its journey.

According to experts’ calculation, it will approach our planet on the 21st of May, at 9.45 PM Eastern Time, or 7:15 A.M Wednesday India time. The estimated speed of the space rock is about 11.68 kilometres/second, according to NASA.

Since it will be within 150 million kilometres between the Sun and Earth, the asteroid is classified as a Near-Earth object.

The National Near-Earth Object Preparedness Strategy and Action Plan warned space objects this large, of around 1 km in diameter, could trigger natural disasters at a global scale if it collides with Earth.

The expected consequences are tsunamis, earthquakes, and lots of other secondary effects occurring far beyond the impacted area.

The extinction of dinosaurs is thought to be caused by an asteroid with a diameter of 10 kilometres when it collided with Earth at the Yucatan peninsula 65 million years ago.

Experts are keeping track on approximately 2,000 comets, asteroids, and other space objects that can crash on Earth.

Ever since the massive asteroid that wipe our dinosaurs 65 million years ago, Earth has not seen any object that is large enough to cause another apocalypse for life on the planet.
