Are AirPods Waterproof? Here Is What You Should Know

If you are heading out for a workout but it suddenly rains or if your accidentally leave your AirPods in your laundry, you might be wondering that are AirPods waterproof? Don’t worry as we are here to answer that question for you.

Are Apple AirPods Waterproof?

AirPods were Apple’s first truly wireless headphones. So how waterproof are AirPods? Officially, both AirPods generations are not waterproof. As a matter of fact, for the AirPods 1, they do not even have a water-resistance rating either.

Keep in mind that water-resistant and waterproof are two wholly different things. With waterproof, water cannot get inside your device. And most consumer gadgets on the market are not waterproof.

On the other hand, water-resistant means that a device is sealed up in a way that in a certain amount of time or in a certain depth underwater, water cannot get in. You might frequently read that a phone is water-resistant for 4 meters underwater for up to 30 minutes.

As Apple AirPods are not water-resistant or waterproof, it is best that you keep them away from water. When it is raining outside, you shouldn’t wear your AirPods. It is the same when you are going for a grueling workout.

If you accidentally leave your AirPods in the laundry, don’t need to panic as in some cases, the AirPods have survived through the washer and dryer.

Air Airpods 2 Waterproof?

The second-generation AirPods of Apple do have an IPX4 rating for splash and sweat-proof. The circuit board of this model has a water-repellent coating. The IP rating system is used to measure the endurance of a product against dust particles and moisture. For comparison, an IP67-rated device is said to be dust-tight and can be submerged 150mm-1000mm underwater for up to 30 minutes. With an IP68 rating, it is similar.

So for the AirPods 2, you’re covered whether you are wearing them for a nice run under the rain or during an intense workout. But remember, don’t go for a swim or shower with them.

How waterproof are AirPods Pro?

The AirPods Pro from Apple is not waterproof either, but they do have a water-resistant rating. The wireless earphones are IPX4-rated, meaning they are water and sweat-resistant.

However, only the AirPods Pro has this coating, not the charging case. But with time, it tends to wear out. Similar to the AirPods 2, you can wear your AirPods Pro when you are working out or when it is drizzling outside. But if you accidentally drop them in water, they might not survive. So don’t use them for swimming.

Some YouTubers have actually tested how long the AirPods Pro can survive in water by putting them in a plastic water bottle. And surprisingly, they managed to survive for hours.

What should you do when you accidentally drop your AirPods or AirPods Pro in the water?

When this happens, first of all, make sure that you dry them out carefully before placing them back in the charging case.

You should use a dry lint-free cloth to wipe all the water off your AirPods or AirPods Pro. A microfiber cloth would be the best choice. Next, leave the earbuds out of the charging case and let them air dry for at least two hours. During this time, make sure that you don’t use them. If you can, just leave them like that overnight.

With AirPods, there is no need to put them in a bag of rice. As these earbuds are so small, it is best to leave them out in the open. For the AirPods charging case, if it gets wet, you should place it upside down. Try using them again when everything is dry.

So are AirPods waterproof? The answer is no. For the AirPods 1, they are neither water-resistant nor waterproof. For the AirPods 2, with an IPX4 rating, they are splash and sweat-proof. It is the same with the AirPods Pro. So with the AirPods 2 and the AirPods Pro,  it is possible for you to wear them during an intense workout session.
