Although Apple Watch has its original role as a wrist-worn second screen, it has been developing as a useful health device over time. It is convenient as not only a wrist-worn screen but also a health device to save people’s life.
In fact, there are many cases that the smartwatch of Apple saves patients’ lives. One of those cases is the incident below.
The incident relates to Dr. Tommy Korn MD - an ophthalmologist in the San Diego Area of California, who saved a heart patient by using his Apple Watch Series 4. The doctor posted the whole incident on Twitter. It occurred at one restaurant. When he was having dinner, a diner suddenly keeled over. There, of course, was not any ECG machine at the restaurant to check the man’s heart; therefore, Korn improvised.
Dr. Korn wore his Series 4 on the man’s wrist in order to detect quickly the irregularity. The result showed that he was suffering from atrial fibrillation. This situation takes place as one’s heart beats irregularly at an elevated rhythm.
Atrial Fibrillation is an often undiagnosed condition until when it becomes dangerous and affects patients’ lives seriously. This is because patients suffered no symptoms before. This can make people take risk of strokes, heart failure, and a large number of further cardiac disorders.
Nonetheless, without any ECG machine at the restaurant, Dr. Korn could detect the man’s heart rate to save him with his Apple Watch. The smartwatch gave him important data to deal with the patient’s situation. No one can deny Apple Watch’s importance as the patient might not have been saved without the smartwatch.
Thanks to Mr. Korn’s quick actions, the man was saved as well as recovered fine later.
Besides this incident, Apple Watch also works well as a health device as an 80-year-old woman was saved by her Apple Watch auto-dialing emergency services for help.
