Over the weekend, Apple CEO Tim Cook uploaded a video in which he revealed that the Cupertino giant had obtained via its global supply chain over 20 million face masks to provide to healthcare workers. Earlier, healthcare staff in the US had received over 6 million N95 masks from the company.
Apple also procured about 10 million masks in total for the country’s medical community.

Cook further stated that the company also has also been working on custom face shields. The first batch has already reached Kaiser Hospital last week.
It remains unknown if these face shields from Apple have received approvals from the FDA or CDC. However, Cook did say that the company’s goal was to obtain 1 million of the face shields by the end of this week and after that a million per week.
Apple is working with government officials and medical professionals across the country to deliver these face shields to areas that are worst-hit by the pandemic. The company also wants to expand the distribution of the custom-designed personal protective equipment (PPE) beyond the US.

Besides Apple, SpaceX has also started to produce hand sanitizers and face shields to donate to hospitals and places that are in need to combat the COVID-19 pandemic.
Tesla recently made a purchase of 1,000 ventilators from China and donated them to California. The company also sent 50,000 N95 masks to the University of Washington Medical Center. Tesla is reportedly partnering with medical equipment company Medtronic to make its own ventilator.
