The infamous AI-based FaceApp has taken the Internet world by storm along with the accusation of storing users’ photo illegally. Despite the backlash that it created, the technology behind this app has appeared to be a lot of kind for a parent couple after it helped them found their missing child, who had got lost for 18 years.

The main character in the story is Yu Weifeng from Shenzhen, China, who went missing 18 years ago. The 21-year-old student in Guangzhou had initially denied being kidnapped after the first approach of the police, but DNA test later proved the truth is that he is the missing child.
According to Metro, the police has used another AI-based technology to predict how he could look like at the time. The software, a product of Tencent AI Lab, has helped him reunite with his biological family thanks to its exact prediction of Yu’s appearance. After processing a photo when he was a child, the software has outputted the result then the police used the closest prediction to run it on a vast database, finding the most appropriate match via a set of 100 people. After two months of sorting out data, Weifeng became the one who had the closest match to the prediction.

On the other hand, FaceApp did see a huge surge in usage around the world. Despite that, the app has also received a lot of concerns and critics due to its privacy issues. Agree to disagree, we have to admit the fascinating use of such technology coming along with it.
