Apple was sued by a New York-based 18-year-old who claimed that he was under arrest for a crime he did not commit because of the company’s facial recognition system installed in its stores around the country.
The man in question, Ousmane Bah was taken into custody by NYPD on the 29th of November as he was the prime suspect in a series of theft cases at Apple Stores in Manhattan, New Jersey, Boston, and Delaware.
However, the real culprit was thought to use the ID stolen from him with Bah’s personal information like name and address on it. Since there is no photo of him on the ID, the man thought that Apple’s facial recognition system in the stores should be held responsible for the false arrest he was a victim of. In response to this accusation, a spokesperson from Apple said that the company did not have such a system in its stores.
When the stores’ security footage was examined, the detective in charge of this case confirmed that the criminal and Bah were two different people and their faces look nothing like each other. Plus, Bah has a solid alibi for the Boston case. He was attending a prom in Manhattan when the theft happened and the culprit took away merchandises worth about $1,200 (more than Rs. 83,000). This lawsuit is weird and no one can be sure if the man can have what he asks for or how the court would react.
According to the New York Post, the lawsuit said that the way Apple used facial recognition in its stores was exactly how the general public visualize Orwellian surveillance that we were afraid of. A scarier scenario was that most customers were not aware of the fact that their faces are being recorded and analyzed when they shop in those stores.
