OpenSignal, a company that specializes in wireless coverage mapping, has conducted a study to measure the loading time for 4G videos in 50 Indian cities and the results are disturbing.
Basically, the organization looks into the time it takes for a video to load and begin playing. The company published the results on its own blog, but it does list the total number of any other detail on the cellular network carriers involved in its study.
OpenSignal’s test lasts for three months, from the first of January, 2019 to the 30th of March, 2019. The company did not say if IPL highlight videos are part of its test nor if highlights were considered to come up with the load times. We do not know the name of the service it used to stream the testing videos either.
Among 50 cities involved in the test, Thiruvananthapuram is the one with the fastest loading time of all. If you are in the city and want to watch a video using 4G, it takes you around 5.8 seconds to load it. The runner up is Chennai with 6 seconds and the city ranking third is Srinagar with 6.1 seconds.
Other major cities have an unimpressive performance with Delhi requires 7.1 seconds, Mumbai takes 7 seconds, Bangalore’s connection is a little faster with 6.7 seconds, Hyderabad loads a video in 6.4 seconds while that of Kolkata is 6.2 seconds. People in Kota and Vasai-Virar enjoy the slowest loading time with 8.1 seconds and 8.3 seconds.
The results came out right after the 2019’s Indian Premier League came to an end. What OpenSignal after is to check the performance of 4G connection in the country can meet with users' demand since streaming cricket on handheld devices are becoming more and more common. This trend is driven by the availability of more affordable smartphones and cheaper data pack in India.
