The world is in a heated race to find vaccines for the novel COVID-19 pandemic and among the nations that have achieved positive results with their research, Russia is the first to register its Sputnik V – a vaccine against COVID-19.

However, the first vaccine isn’t always the best vaccine or an effective vaccine. According to Tass - a Russian news agency, around 20 people who have been administered the first round of Sputnik V have caught COVID-19.

On Monday, Vadim Tarasov – one of the organizers of the vaccine trial made public the cases of the 20 infected people. He said it was too early to jump to conclusion that the infection is directly linked to the vaccine as these people didn’t have enough time for their immune system to build up a defense against the virus.

Vadim Tarasov is Sechenov University’s Institute for Translational Medicine and Biotechnology’s director and he explained that the best they could say was there were 20 people caught COVID-19 and they were associated with the vaccine. So at this point, concluding that they were inoculated and then got sick with the virus is incorrect.

He also added that these infected people had not had their second round of inoculation yet, which is necessary to boost the effective rate from 90% to 92%.

It is believed that the immune system of those administered with the Sputnik V vaccine will be stronger against COVID-19 after day 42 after the second shot was given.

Tarasov emphasized that the vaccine could not inject people with COVID-19 as its antigens could only provoke an immune response.

Tarasov assured that the inoculation would cause nothing bad because the infection was mild so there should be no side effects or complications. He said infected people might not even notice they were carrying the virus.
