Rumors about Samsung using a 120HZ display on its upcoming flagship smartphones raised following the company’s announcement of the next-gen mobile chipsets, Exynos 990. It was introduced with support for 108MP sensors and displays with up to 120Hz refresh rate.

Not long after that, a secret menu in Samsung’s OneUI 2.0 beta revealed an option that allows users to switch between 60Hz to 120Hz refresh rate. For now, there is no Samsung's flagship smartphone has a display with a refresh rate above 60Hz, so this setting is pretty much useless.

Samsung flagships have always equipped with the best displays, so this news is not something too surprising at all. It will reportedly be announced alongside a new foldable phone called Galaxy Fold 2.

The trend of smartphone display with a high refresh rate has been getting more popular since last year. A display having a high refresh rate means that the images will be displayed smoother. For now, there have been a handful of flagships from different brands that have displays with over 60Hz refresh rate. For example, the 90Hz display has been available on the Huawei Mate 30 Pro, Google Pixel 4, Realme X2 Pro, OnePlus 7, and OnePlus 7T. Meanwhile, the gaming-centric ASUS ROG Phone II became the first phone in the market with a 120Hz display.
