Next month, Huawei will launch its next flagship, 5G-enabled smartphone, dubbed the Mate 30 Pro though it’s likely that the new device won’t run on Android or have Google apps. According to a spokesperson from Google on Wednesday, while the US has temporarily lifted the ban on the company, this reprieve is not effective for new Huawei products.
Back in May, the Trump administration blacklisted the Chinese giant due to concerns over national security as it is close to the Chinese government. The company has since repeatedly denied this charge.
However, companies in the US can sell their equipment to the firm, as confirmed by Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross in July, if those companies obtain licenses when there are no national security threats. Since the reprieve, there have been over 130 applications submitted for licenses to sell products to Huawei.
The Reuters reports that the Chinese telecom giant will announce Huawei Mate 30 Pro smartphone on September 18.
Just last week, Vincent Pang, Huawei’s Senior VP, said that the company doesn’t plan to launch a phone running on Harmony operating system in 2019, as it still wants to stick to Android.
Huawei, Google, and the Department of Commerce did not respond immediately to a comment request.
When the US issued a ban order on Huawei, major tech companies followed and cut their ties with the Chinese firm with Google one of the first doing so. However, Google itself then expressed worries that the ban could hurt the US more than previously thought.
