Huawei's Phone Sales Rose 66% in China While Rivals Plummeted

Chinese phone maker Huawei saw a 66 percent increase in its smartphone sales in China at the expense of its rivals like Oppo, Xiaomi, Vivo, and Apple.

New figures from Canalys show that Huawei’s smartphone sales in China increased 66% from the same period last year in the third quarter of 2019, compared to the 31% growth it reported in the previous quarter. Going into the numbers also shows a clear contrast between the success of the company and its main rivals, including Vivo, OPPO, Xiaomi, and Apple, each of which has experienced a sharp decline in sales.

The total number of smartphones sold was still only 98 million for the third quarter, but Apple's decline has increased from 14% in the second quarter to 28% for the third quarter, while Xiaomi's decline has increased from 20% to 33%.

In contrast, Huawei seems to be absorbing its rival’s market share, as its figure increased from 24.9% to 42.4% this year. Besides, this Chinese technology giant has gradually created a big gap between them and other phone makers. That gives it a dominant position in the smartphone business.

While it may not be possible to pinpoint all of the reasons why the brand has such an increase in sales in a declining market. There is an opinion that the US decision to put the brand on the commercial blacklist had a major impact on this success. Many of the company's retail partners in China have launched advertising campaigns linking Huawei with the “patriotic choice”.

Globally, Huawei recently reported that sales surpassed 200 million smartphones in 2019, two months earlier than last year. However, the full impact of the U.S. trade ban that Google stops providing Android and apps for Huawei products has yet to be statistics. The first phone series affected by the ban is the Huawei Mate 30. The lineup includes Huawei Mate 30, Mate 30 Pro, and Mate 30 RS. These phones still run Google's operating software - Android, but they can't access Google's services like YouTube, Google Maps, and Google Play. Let's see if Huawei's solution can solve this issue, or their business will be massively impacted by this ban.
