At Delhi Auto Expo 2020, Reliance Jio showed off the company’s connected car technology, making it the first telco to set its foot into the automobile segment. This is part of a grander scheme of the company to become an IoT (Internet of Things) provider, rather than being solely a mobile service operator.
Reliance Jio’s solution involves hardware connectivity, data security, and scaling. The company is believed to be discussing terms with fleet management firms and automobile manufacturers. However, nothing is official for now.
According to a source with insight into the development of the company, Jio will offer vehicles with a tracking system for logistics and transport service companies. This expo is the opportunity for Reliance Jio to exhibit the role network, connectivity, and technology play in future connected cars.
A connected vehicle comes with lots of benefits, with the most expected are helping users drive safer and easier. The service will also offer users notifications on the speed and fuel level as well as usage. The system can also help with safe driving through smart braking. Other benefits are support with vehicle diagnostics and telemetrics, and route management.
The idea of connected cars is gaining momentum as hybrid and electric cars are becoming more and more common. In India, other telecom service providers might seek partnerships with auto manufacturers as Reliance Jio did. However, the company has refused to comment on its partnerships with the manufacturers.
