If you have watched the movie Elysium, you may have got yourself an idea of how an exoskeleton looks. However, Samsung comes up with a different approach that it showcased at the Las Vegas event, CES 2019.
Specifically, the company unveiled a line of concepts for exoskeletons, which seem light, sleek, and most importantly, users won’t have anything screwed into their spines.
At CES, a reporter from Gizmodo took the chance to wear Samsung’s skeleton, called GEMS-H with GEMS for Gait Enhancing and Motivating System. One of the introduced models is designed to hug your upper thighs and hips, along with a pair of modules strapped to your legs that help you walk. After strapping the modules, you will hardly feel the weight and can just start walking as usual. The GEMS-H makes it easier to walk, and it requires no controls or buttons.
Apparently, GEMS-H lifts users’ legs as they walk and it won’t be strange if you feel like walking on air with this device, especially when climbing stairs. Wearing GEMS-H, you don’t have to spend as much energy on moving.
Besides GEMS-H, Samsung also showed off GEMS-K and GEMS-A, which are larger GEMS models. In particular, GEMS-K extends down below your knees, which may give extra lift in compared with GEMS-H, plus a small kick in your knees. GEMS-A goes even further, supporting your lower legs and featuring a small platform to support your foot.
Plus, Samsung’s exoskeletons look badass. They convey a fashionable design with white motors that are neatly placed on your legs and a small one on your back.
However, these GEMS models are still concepts, which Samsung did not say when or if it will even bring its exoskeletons to regular production. If such user-friendly devices are made widely available, they can be a life-changing tool for a countless number of people, especially the elders.
